MARK KNIGHT AND THE UNSUNG HEROES
release Road Sick Eyes, the band’s new
full-length recording on Sandpoint Records
Ever since that day 26 years ago when he founded the rock band Bang Tango as a teenager in Los Angeles, Mark Knight was destined to record Road Sick Eyes, the remarkable new full-length recording Knight and supporting musicians The Unsung Heroes have released on Sandpoint Records.
Knight couldn’t be more accurate when he describes the music on Road Sick Eyes as “electrified singer-songwriter roots rock with a dash of country and blues.”
Knight penned all 12 songs on the recording. Each composition is based on the joys and struggles of life — sometimes as it relates to the songwriter, but more often as it affects other interesting people he encounters at home in California or while touring other distinctive regions of the U.S., such as central Appalachia and the South.
“It’s kind of like a radar,” Knight says of his ability to observe and come up with material for great songs. “My inspiration to write comes from subject matter I find interesting. I tend to write about other people and characters I run across in life, but I also write a lot about the traveling I do and my own personal experiences I go through.”
When guitarist extraordinaire Knight gets an idea for a new song, he is likely to sit down with his trusty Guild acoustic guitar to work out the chords for the song while he waits for the lyrics and melody that always seem to come. “Other times I will crank out a riff on my electric guitar and build a song around that,”he explains.
Whether the songs on Road Sick Eyes were formed on the acoustic or electric guitar, Knight knew he could get help where needed from the outstanding music veterans who make up The Unsung Heroes — guitarist/backing vocalist Mark Tremalgia and drummer Tigg Ketler (both also formerly of Bang Tango), and bassist Reeve Downes (Rhino Bucket).
“We all find a groove and everyone adds their bits,” Knight says.
In order to capture “the band sound,” Road Sick Eyes was recorded live over the course of a year with few overdubs added by producer Tom Lavin. Knight believes the album is made even stronger by the fact that many of the musicians who appear on the recording were having their own trials and tribulations during the process “It was just crazy, nonstop,” Knight says. “Something was always going on, but we just powered through. I couldn’t be more proud.”
